Summary:
The Financial Counselor is responsible for assisting patients and their families in the exploration and potential qualification for payment options. This may include qualification for charity, for HCAP, for Medicaid, for financial hardship and for working with the patient to pay the portion with which they are responsible to pay.
Responsibilities:
1.Is responsible for exploring options for payment of health care services for patients as requested or those without or with limited health care insurance coverage.
2.Assists the family in obtaining health care funding and/or setting up payment plans. This may include Medicaid, qualification for charity or HCAP.
3.Provides timely assistance to patients and/or their families in order to facilitate rapid resolution to eliminate delays in treatment.
4.Provides estimations of services as requested or automatically based on policy or practice. Estimates provide knowledge of out of pocket payment needs and options related to payment of same.
5.Must maintain excellence in customer service with appropriate and empathetic responsiveness to questions and/or concerns presented by patients.
6.Must be fully versed in the self-pay discounting programs as defined by policy and be available to articulate said policies to patients and/or their families as needed.
7.Face to face, telephonic and electronic communication with patients and/or their families is required.
8.Adherence to applicable policy, regulations and internally defined qualify and timely standards related to HCAP and charity processing is required.
9.Other duties as required.
Other information:
Technical Expertise
1.Experience in a moderate to large hospital based healthcare enterprise in a position that is assigned to access with similar responsibilities is preferred.
2.Knowledge of relevant rules and regulations associated with patient qualification for various programs is preferred.
3.Experience working with patients, patients' responsible parties, providers/physicians, clinical staff and revenue cycle colleagues is preferred.
4.Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.
5.Epic experience is preferred.
Education and Experience
1.Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
2.Certification: Complete Medical terminology test to be administered by Human Resources is required.
3.Years of relevant experience: 3 to 5 years is preferred.
4.Years of experience supervising: N/A
